Gaulish Worldview

The Ancient Gauls

The Gauls, an ancient group of tribes that once inhabited regions spanning modern-day France, Belgium, Switzerland, Turkey, and Italy, They were accomplished in metalwork and crafts, credited with innovations such as chainmail, barrels, and animal fat-based soaps. Renowned for their courage in battle, a majority of The Gauls people, the common people, were primarily engaged in farming as agriculture was their main occupation. The Gauls possessed diverse customs with intricate practices and views similar to what we call today Animism, Polytheism, and Pantheism with many pantheon of gods. Rooted in the rhythms of nature, the Gaulish worldview placed profound importance on the changing seasons, the life cycles of flora and fauna, and celestial movements. They believed in a coexistent spiritual realm, and their religious observances aimed to harmonize the connections between this realm and the material world. The Druides of Gaul taught about transmigration of the soul and gave us three laws: Honor the Gods, Do no Evil, and Hold your Behavior. The Gauls revered deities linked to natural forces, the land, the home, the elements, birth, death, and life conducting religious rituals led by a Gutuatir and Uâtîs, overseen by the esteemed Druides who held a unique role in Gaulish society. The Gauls valued concepts such as honor, piety, and community. This worldview infused their daily lives with a sense of the sacred, where every action held spiritual significance.

The Gaulish Revival

The Gaulish revival gained momentum in the last 10 years and continues to thrive today. As modern enthusiasts explore and reinterpret ancient Gaulish traditions, they draw inspiration from historical texts, archaeological findings, and comparative studies of other neighboring cultures such as the Greeks, Roman, Germanic, Britons and so on. Gaulish Pagans engage in a variety of practices, including the reconstruction of Gaulish rituals, the study of ancient languages, culture through art, music, storytelling and the development of a spiritual connection with Gaulish deities. They seek to revive, reconstruct, and reconnect to Gaulish practices based on available historical and archaeological evidence, blending ancient traditions with contemporary spirituality.

The Gaulish Revival can be envisioned as a great wheel, with the past and its wellspring of inspiration residing at the core. Radiating from this central hub are diverse spokes, symbolizing various approaches such as Gallo-Roman, Gallo-Germanic, Gallo-Hellenic, Gallo-Brythonic, Gaulish, and more. These spokes represent the manifold branches of revivalist interpretation. Encircling the wheel is the rim, embodying individual interpretations that, like a unifying force, converge around the central core of inspiration.
